 Music

Music is a vital part of life at the Junior School. Students begin music instruction in Junior Kindergarten and, as they mature, they study voice, percussion, recorder, guitar, composition and theory. Our spacious and colourful Performing Arts Room is an ideal space for students to spread their musical wings.

The music curriculum provides a broad variety of musical experiences. The opportunity to listen, feel and act creatively with music materials is integrated with the continued development of performance skills and the appreciation of the value of music as a means of enriching one's life. Students at all levels are encouraged in the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as they apply to music. Students are encouraged to join the Junior School Choir or Instrumental Ensemble.

In our Senior and Middle School, students expand on their knowledge of both Instrumental and Vocal music.

The Instrumental Music course emphasizes the creation and performance of music, and it develops technique, sensitivity and imagination. Students develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. They also develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music as well as a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life. All students are encouraged to join a school ensemble. Students will be able to select from a range of band and string instruments.

The Vocal Music course is also aimed at developing technique, sensitivity and imagination. Students develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. They also learn correct musical terminology. Students are encouraged to sing in a school choir.

Senior music lovers have the option of joining a variety of musical ensembles, including the Chamber Strings, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra and Stage Band. Choirs include the 7/8 Singers, Chamber Choir, Jazz Choir and Senior Choir.
