iCAST: Girls vs. Boys: Closing the Giving Divide
Alex and Natalie Avery know the value of providing opportunities for big challenges. That’s why they’re supporting iCAST with a generous gift and naming a bench to cement their legacy, and daughter Feny's (Grade 9), at Branksome Hall.
“Everyone in the family is competitive and the chance to support iCAST was immediately attractive,” shared Alex and Natalie. Feny is already a competitive gymnast and cheerleader. “Self-confidence is earned through accomplishment; it’s not awarded through flattery or compliments.”
A gift to iCAST, therefore, aligned perfectly with their values. “iCAST is an ideal venue to present challenges and have the opportunity, with the right resources to meet them. iCAST will create a level playing field to address the gender divide in male-dominated careers, with a strong focus on STEM and technical skills development.”
And speaking of the gender divide, a major one exists between giving to girls’ and boys’ schools. When Natalie and Alex heard girls’ schools receive just one-quarter of the amount directed to boys’ schools, this disparity compelled them to support their daughter’s school.
While Alex and Natalie are aware Feny is still exploring her options and passions, they know it’s important to prepare her with the advantages to realize her full potential, and iCAST is that training ground: “The earlier you can establish a level playing field, the easier it will be to foster a positive, inclusive and equitable environment in our daughters’ adult lives."
