Sophie is the youngest member of the stage band at Branksome. “It’s traditionally been for senior students, but I was so eager to be a part of it,” says Sophie. “And so I asked Mr. Harbin if I could audition. I played ‘Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty on my guitar.”
Enjoying the camaraderie with her fellow musicians, she says the older students have welcomed her into the band with open arms. Some of them have become her mentors at Branksome.
New to the school as of last year, she points out these kind of opportunities are the norm at Branksome. “Other schools I’ve been at haven’t had those opportunities in music and art.”
Sophie – who has been playing acoustic and electric guitar since she was six – says the school has also introduced her to saxophone. “I really love playing it,” she says. “Mr. Harbin plays the saxophone and has helped me learn new notes and different songs.”
“When I was little, I always said I wanted to be a rock star. Now I think I’ll go into medicine,” she says. “I also want to keep going with my music.”
