Sara ETTEHADIEH'20 Gives Branksome Athletes the Ultimate Experience

Sara ETTEHADIEH'20 returned from university and volunteered her time to help coach our ultimate teams this spring. Sara played ultimate frisbee for McMaster University, where they won the university championships—and she started playing when she was at Branksome! Sara shared some of her wisdom around sport, participation and her experience at Branksome:
What was the highlight of playing sports at the university level?
The first highlight was gaining a special community that changed my university experience. Joining ultimate in my third year allowed me to make friends outside of my program, which was difficult since my first year was online and my residence was closed because of COVID. Additionally, it allowed me to integrate into the Hamilton ultimate community, where I met even more amazing people! It also gave me a goal to work towards something that was not school related. The most exciting highlight was winning the Canadian national championship out of 23 women's teams two years in a row!

What did you learn during your time as an athlete at Branksome that transferred to your time as an athlete in university (and beyond)?
Time management! As a rower, hockey player and field hockey player, it was a balancing act to manage everything. Learning to balance school, schoolwork and friends in high school made the transition to university smoother. I was even able to take on a leadership position within the club because I had learned these foundations. I also learned how to push myself and work hard. Even though I was a rower for only two years, it taught me how to push myself in sports and find my internal motivation. Something that got me through the early morning practices and all weekend-long tournaments. I gained confidence in trying new things. If I hadn't felt supported in trying sports at Branksome by all the coaches, I wouldn't have had the confidence to try out at the university level. A lot of the athletic ability can transfer over! Don't be afraid to try new things.

What was the best part about returning to BH to help coach?
As I mentioned, the community I found in university—because of ultimate frisbee—completely changed my experience. Meeting new people was especially valuable since my first year was during the pandemic, and we didn't have residences. I loved coming back to inspire other players to work hard and improve, so they can get the same sense of community spirit that I did! Furthermore, I wanted them to feel that same love and passion for a sport that does not always get the hype it deserves! Additionally, Branksome is where I started playing ultimate. It was awesome to return to where it all began and see my previous teachers again.

What is some advice that you would give to a BH athlete?
Take a chance and try out for a new team; it could be the best decision of your life! Always work hard and don't be afraid of failure or feedback. That is where you are going to improve. One example that I can think of was losing to one university team the entire season, even during the championship weekend during the round robin. However, our team pulled it together and was able to win by one point in the semi-finals, showing how we could improve and learn from previous losses. Use the athletics resources that Branksome has while you can!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.*

*The Land Acknowledgement may evolve as we honour our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation in partnership with Indigenous communities.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
