My Dear Red Rose

My Dear Red Rose

by Raven, Grade 11
Her breath reminds me of the water coming to greet the shore.
She leaves me always waiting for what’s next in store.

Her tears reminiscent of early morning dew,
Her hair of reeds and spider webs I wish to run my hands through.

Her skin as smooth as stone with all the imperfections.
Her eyes the colour of bark within them my reflection.

Her voice as soft as silk when needed to be.
Her words are as tough as diamonds but are wise as can be.

Her lips sweet as maple and as colourful as leaves.
Everything that she whispers I am led to believe.

She resembles the world in all its beauty and grace.
I can count all the constellations splattered all across her face.

She is as sweet as honey with the zest of lemon too.
She is all the flavours I want and all I wish I knew.

She encompasses my home and all I have to know.
The dirt beneath her nails point me where I want to go.

I have never seen something so beautiful and so truly grand.
Someone who resembles the perfection of the land.

I was told to love the planet that on which I live.
It is only natural that I love someone who represents all the earth has to give.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
We wish to acknowledge this land on which Branksome operates. For thousands of years, it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and go to school on this land.

Setting the new standard for girls' education everywhere takes collective action. From all of us.
