Extra! Extra! Grade 5 Launches "The Ribbit Report"

Published On:

The Junior School's news landscape changed forever in October 2025 with the premiere of The Ribbit Report, a student-led broadcast produced by the Grade 5 class. This initiative began in September 2025 with pilot broadcasts, followed by a Junior School-wide vote on the official name, which officially launched in November.

The Ribbit Report is shared with Junior School students twice a month and focuses on a variety of local and global initiatives. They cover everything from the Daily Food Bank drive, ReconciliAction, the Long Lake #58 Clothing Drive for an Indigenous community, Anti-Bullying Week, the Winter Market, the Shoebox Drive supporting local women in need, Black History Month, Mental Health Matters Week, the Olympics, International Women’s Day, Earth Week and so much more.

Every episode features a “Spotlight Story” segment. Our Grade 5 reporters interview their fellow students from JK all the way up to Grade 6, shining a bright light on peers who show incredible grit, nail a Learner Profile Attribute or ATL skill, or take action to make their community better.

“Through The Ribbit Report, our students discovered the power of their voices to inspire, connect and create meaningful change within our community,” said Lara Down, Assistant Head, Junior School & PYP Coordinator.

“Rooted in our school’s commitment to well-being, this initiative provides opportunities for students to lead with empathy, take risks, celebrate one another and recognize the impact of everyday actions,” notes Down. “Watching our Grade 5 students uplift their peers, share important stories, and grow in confidence as communicators and leaders has been incredibly meaningful. The Ribbit Report has become more than a broadcast; it has become a space where student agency, belonging and community flourish. Together, our students are showing that when girls are empowered to lead with courage and compassion, they truly can make a difference.”

This year, students worked in small groups to lead two broadcasts throughout the year—one broadcast for each group per term—while reflecting on the lessons and skills developed from each experience.

Here are some of the students’ thoughts from this inaugural season:

The Ribbit Report showed students how to be upstanders and how to be a good member of the community,” - Safiya

“We really like The Ribbit Report because we got to showcase our learning and teach the Junior School. It impacts teamwork and collaborating, and it really brought us together. We also got to showcase our writing skills by writing our scripts.” - Juliana, Mila, Sophia, Victoria

The Ribbit Report gave Grade 5 students the opportunity to work with younger and older students to share important information around the school.” - Amelia

“I loved The Ribbit Report because it allowed us to be creative in our own way." - Daya

“As Grade 5s and the upcoming leaders of the Junior School, we felt proud to have a voice. We appreciate the opportunity this year to interview and talk with the rest of the school. We are very proud to have been part of the beginning of The Ribbit Report. We hope the Grade 5s next year will have the same wonderful experience.” - Niia, Anastasia, Sonia

As we prepare for the year’s final Ribbit Report at the beginning of June, we look forward to gathering reflections in June to learn what the Junior School community most enjoyed and valued about the broadcast.

Whether they are exploring mental health or International Women’s Day, these Grade 5 broadcasters have proved that you’re never too young to have a voice.
