What is Swim Camp?

Camp Type: Swim

Swim Camp builds strong swim skills and offers all the fun of day camp! Campers participate in twice-daily swim lessons taught by Lifesaving Society certified instructors, plus general camp activities such as games, crafts, sports and outdoor play.

Campers benefit from a low instructor-to-swimmer ratio and a supportive, achievement-focused environment. Lessons teach swimming and survival strokes, safe decision-making in and around water, while helping swimmers increase distance and speed at their level.

Important Information

Selecting the correct level is essential for safety and group success.

✔ You must register your swimmer in the appropriate level
✔ Use the Lifesaving Society swim levels as a guide
✔ If unsure, please contact our Aquatics Lead prior to registration at swim@branksome.on.ca.

To ensure correct placement, all Swim Camp participants must upload proof of their current swim level or complete an assessment before March 2, 2026

Swim Assessments are available on the following dates/times. You MUST book an appointment in advance by emailing swim@branksome.on.ca:

  • January 10 & 11, 2026: 1:002:00 p.m. and 5:00–6:00 p.m.
  • Saturdays & Sundays from January 17 to March 1, 2026 from 1:00–2:00 p.m.

Important: Registrations without documentation by March 2, 2026, may be cancelled. Level changes after camp begins are not possible. We will attempt to assist with level switches before camp (subject to availability).

Due to high demand, campers may only register for ONE Swim Camp session of lessons (two weeks), plus a non-lesson camp such as Aqua All-Stars (one week) or Aquatic Sport (two weeks), per summer.

Registrations for multiple swim lesson sessions will be cancelled, and cancellation fees may apply. If, after May 1, 2026, there is availability in swim camp sessions, campers may register for an additional session.

We’re Here to Help!

If you need assistance choosing a level or submitting required documentation, please contact swim@branksome.on.ca.

Appropriate Swim Level Chart

Ages 4–5, completed Preschool 3

Preschool 4: Advanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumps into deeper water and get out by themselves. They'll do sideways entries and open their eyes underwater. They'll master a short swim on their front wearing a lifejacket and gliding and kicking on their side.

Preschool 5: These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing a lifejacket and treading water for 10 sec. They'll work on front and back crawl swims for 5 metres, interval training and get a giggle out of whip kick.

Ages 5–7

These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a lifejacket. They'll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold their breath underwater. They'll work on floats, glides and kicking through the water on their front and back.

Ages 5–7, completed Swimmer 1

These advanced beginners will jump into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a lifejacket. They'll be able to support themselves at the surface without an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10 m on their front and back, and be introduced to flutter kick interval training (4 x 5 m).

Ages 5–7, completed Swimmer 2

These junior swimmers will dive and do in-water front somersaults and handstands. They'll work on 15 m of front crawl, back crawl and 10 m of whip kick. Flutter kick interval training increases to 4 x 15 m.

Ages 8–10, completed Swimmer 3

These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m underwater and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, and breaststroke arms with breathing. Their new bag of tricks includes the completion of the Canadian Swim to Survive® Standard. They'll cap it all off with front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or back crawl interval training.

Ages 8–10, completed Swimmer 4

These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. They'll refine their front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 25 m. Then they'll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 15 m breaststroke.

Ages 8–10, completed Swimmer 5

These advanced swimmers will rise to the challenge of sophisticated aquatic skills including stride entries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They'll develop strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They'll easily swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke, and they'll complain about the 300 m workout.

Ages 9–12

Rookie Patrol: Swimmers continue stroke development with 50 m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving Sport skills include a 25 m obstacle swim and 15 m object carry. First Aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. Fitness improves in 350 m workouts and 100 m timed swims.

Ranger Patrol: Swimmers develop better strokes over 75 m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving Sport skills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First Aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation.

Star Patrol: Swimmers are challenged with 600 m workouts, 300 m timed swims and a 25 m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100 m swims. First Aid focuses on treatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratory emergencies including asthma and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defense methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting a victim face up in shallow water.

Camp Details

Two adults and two young children walk together on a shaded path surrounded by green foliage. The adults wear green shirts and shorts, while the children wear colorful summer clothes. All appear cheerful and engaged.

Dress Code

Dress for an active day.

Wear running shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty!

We recommend bringing a change of clothes in case of accidents or situations which require a change of clothes.

A group of children smile and perform dance moves in a brightly lit room with large windows. The focus is on a girl in a gray T-shirt, with other kids and an adult instructor in the background.

Daily Activities

Each camp has a focus and daily activities also include camp-style games and outdoor play.

Bring sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle labelled with your camper’s name.

A swim instructor in a pool gives a high-five to a smiling child wearing goggles and a red flotation device, while other children swim nearby during a swimming lesson.

Swimming

All camps include recreational swimming 2–3 times per week.

Bring a bathing suit and towel on your swim days (a schedule will be sent to registered families).

There is no alternative programming available during swim time.

Children stand in line at a cafeteria, holding trays as a staff member serves food behind a glass counter. Other staff, wearing green shirts, assist in the background. The atmosphere appears busy and organized.

Meals

Lunch and two snacks are included each day.

Sample menu available here.

WHY SWIM?

Because summer is for swimming! Dive into fun in our saltwater pools. While all of our camps include recreational swimming a few times a session, our swim camps include twice-daily swim lessons. With certified Lifesaving Society instructors guiding their progress, swim campers have the opportunity to achieve a new swim level by the end of the two-week session. Those wanting more playtime in the pool can cannonball into a specialty two-week Aquatic Sport camp, or our one-week Aqua All Stars camp. Through splashes and challenges, swim campers advance their skills, develop resilience and focus, and build a love of staying active, helping them feel safe and empowered in, on and around the water.
