Middle and Senior School Routines

East Campus Traffic, Drop-Off and Parking

To reduce traffic congestion on Elm Ave., instead of coming to 10 Elm Avenue for drop-off or pick-up, please drop off or pick up your daughter on Sherbourne Street (north of Elm). Parents may also want to consider South Drive as an alternative location for student pick-up and drop-off.

Parking spaces at Branksome Hall are very limited. There are a few visitor spaces in front of Sherborne House (West Side), and no spaces for student parking. Unauthorized parked vehicles, including student vehicles, will be subject to ticketing and/or towing. Repeat offenders may be subject to additional disciplinary action.

Unfortunately, there is limited street parking in the Branksome Hall neighbourhood, and many areas have restrictions posted, including along Elm Avenue. The City enforces these restrictions, and, on occasion, illegally parked vehicles are ticketed or towed away. There are several private and city parking lots within a 10-minute walk of the school.

We encourage families to find alternatives to driving students to school whenever possible. Walking, biking, carpooling, and public transit may be viable alternatives. The subway stations closest to Branksome Hall are Sherbourne and Bloor/Yonge. To encourage the use of the TTC by Senior and Middle School students, we sell TTC tickets in The Shop.

The school has taken measures to minimize traffic congestion at drop-off and pick-up times. Please keep our students safe by obeying these guidelines:

  1. Please pay attention to pedestrians on campus and on surrounding streets.
  2. No honking or gestures.
  3. Be respectful of our staff members directing traffic.
  4. Consider our neighbours. Do not block driveways.
  5. Do not arrive more than 10 minutes before pick-up.
  6. The Middle and Senior School pick-up location is on the East Campus only. Do not park on the West Campus to pick up Middle and Senior School students, as this adds to congestion for Junior School families.
  7. Do not use the West Campus as a turning circle for the East Campus.
  8. No standing or parking on Elm Avenue. Respect the traffic signs and do not create difficulty for emergency vehicles or our neighbours.
  9. No drop-off on Mount Pleasant Road. It is unsafe.

Daily Routines & Organizational Tools

Middle School
The academic school day starts at 8:20 a.m. for Middle School students and ends at 3:40 p.m. On Wednesday, Late-Start days, Period 1 begins at 9:20 and classes end at 3:40.

Senior School
Senior School students begin at 8:25 a.m. (on days they have a Period 1 class) and end each day at 3:45 p.m. On Wednesday, Late-Start days, Period 1 begins at 9:20 and classes end at 3:40.

The first period of the day is “static,” while the other four periods “tumble” throughout the ten-day cycle. Teachers take attendance every period.

All students in Grades 9–12 are required to have a Texas Instruments TI-84+ calculator with them in every Math class. Please see here for the calculators required for Grades 7–12 students. Students should purchase their calculators independently before the start of the school year.

Students are required to use the overpass to cross Mount Pleasant Road for safety. Any student (who is not accompanied by an adult) who crosses Mount Pleasant during school hours without using the overpass will receive a TRAC (Time for Reflection & Contemplation). Student security cards allow access to the AWC from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or to 10 Elm from 6:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.  Please note that students may not access buildings after hours.

The Christie-Pepall Dining Hall, located in the AWC, and The Hub servery (near the Grades 9–10 Hub) are both open for student use. The AWC has a variety of meal options that can be taken to go or eaten in the Dining Hall. The Hub servery has grab-and-go items available for purchase with a student’s photo ID security card only.

The practice of having food delivered to the school is strongly discouraged. Leaving a class to pick up a food delivery is not allowed. Students who forget their lunch should speak with their appropriate Administrator to solution a plan, which may include ordering food. If necessary, pickup can only happen outside the gates of 10 Elm Ave. on East Campus, or in front of the AWC on the sidewalk on West Campus.

Field trips provide students with valuable educational experiences by extending classroom learning and co-curricular experiences into other areas of daily life. All curricular and co-curricular field trips are assessed for risk by faculty before approval, and specific student-to-teacher ratios are followed.

Parents are required to provide Branksome Hall with their daughter’s current health information via the Portal. Students must confirm their agreement with the Code of Conduct to participate in field trips. Except for travel for Athletics, parents will be asked to complete a Google Consent Form for each trip. Certain field trips require additional forms and/or third-party forms to be completed. The summer forms on the Portal include an additional field trip consent that covers neighbourhood walks (including the walk to Mattamy Athletic Arena on Hockey Day).

Grades 7–10 students will be assigned a locker at the start of the year. Locker locations are posted on the student’s Portal profile page and printed and posted in several locations around the school. Grades 11–12 students may sign up for a locker in the first week of school and will be assigned one at that time. Lockers in the Science wing and third-floor Geography hallway are available to all students on an as-needed basis. Students in Grades 7 (as well as new Grade 8 students) will receive a lock on the first day of school.

Middle School students can look for lost items in the Lost and Found lockers next to classroom M4 on the main floor of the Middle School building.

Students can access Senior School Lost and Found locations by the lockers next to the 9–10 Hub TV and by the Senior School Gym doors.

There is also a Lost and Found near the entrance to the AWC servery. All items should be clearly marked so they can be returned to the student if found.

Parents are strongly discouraged from texting or calling their daughters during the school day. The reception desk will pass messages along to students on behalf of parents.

Messages for students in Grades 7–12 will be emailed to their school email address. In an emergency, a staff member will visit the student’s classroom. Should your daughter need to call home, she may ask permission to do so using her cell phone or at reception.

For incoming calls, the school switchboard is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please use the automated line (416-920-6265) to leave messages at any time for teachers and staff on the school’s voicemail system.

The use of cell phones, tablets, laptops and wearable devices is not permitted in class, including during class breaks, unless the teacher has specifically requested their use or they are part of a student’s Learning Strategies Plan. They must be out of sight (e.g. in a student’s school bag or locker) with notifications turned off. They are also not permitted during Advisor, Athletics games or practices, and are only permitted during co-curriculars at the discretion of the faculty or staff member leading the activity.

Grades 9–12 students may use their devices when not in a scheduled class. Throughout the day (including lunch and community time), personal electronic devices are strongly encouraged to be used only for school-related work and activities and at the discretion of the classroom teacher.

Grades 7–8 students are required to keep their devices in their lockers and out of sight for the entirety of the school day, including lunch and breaks. The Middle School building is a device-free zone for all students at any time of day.

The school is supervised in the mornings before school, starting at 7:45 a.m., should your daughter need to come to school early. The Middle School will close at 4:30 p.m. at the end of Homework Club. Students may go to AWC after this time. There is supervision on campus throughout the school day, including at lunch and during Community Time. After school, students may remain on campus until 5:30 p.m. If a student cannot leave campus before this time, they must go to the AWC.
