She turned a dorm room idea into a business, and she’s not stopping there.

Alicia, a Grade 10 student from Shanghai, has called Branksome Hall home for the past three years. Arriving in Grade 8, Alicia adjusted to a new country, school and community all at once, and credits Branksome Boarding with making the transition both smooth and meaningful. “Boarding has really allowed me to meet people from all over the world, across all grades,” she shares. From weekend trips to the ROM and escape rooms to casual evenings spent with friends, Alicia says boarding has given her a strong sense of independence and connection.

There’s always something to do, and the friendships I’ve built in boarding have been such a huge part of my Branksome experience.

Living in Toronto has also been a new and exciting chapter for Alicia. Though she had previously visited the city to see her grandparents, becoming a full-time resident introduced her to Toronto’s diverse culture and vibrant lifestyle. “Coming from Shanghai, it felt familiar in some ways, but different too, especially how open and expressive people are here,” she reflects. This openness inspired her to pursue new interests, including entrepreneurship. In Grade 9, Alicia launched a small business through Branksome’s student-led Noodle program, selling handmade lip glosses. She continues to grow her business and hopes to take it beyond the school community in the years ahead.

Athletics have also played a key role in Alicia’s Branksome journey. As a member of the ski team, ultimate frisbee team and a budding cross-country runner, she values the opportunity to try something new every season. “Each term brings something different, and it’s always exciting to explore new sports and push myself,” she says. Looking ahead, Alicia hopes to keep building her business, deepen her friendships, and continue developing as an entrepreneur.

I want to make way for future female entrepreneurs,” she says. “And I hope one day to create something truly impactful, starting right here at Branksome.
