Branksome Hall
First Friday Night Lights Sparks Highlanders Spirit
Published On:

It was an exciting night full of school spirit on September 26, when the Branksome Hall Highlanders Senior Soccer team took on the Havergal Gators for Friday Night Lights. History was made that evening, as it was the first time that a girls' school in our association had hosted such an event. Friday Night Lights was an exciting way to build community, garner excitement and pride for our student-athletes and most importantly, celebrate girls in sport.

Branksome’s side of the event was organized by Katie Flynn, Director of Athletics. “We were so honoured when Havergal invited Branksome to be a part of the first-ever Friday Night Lights event,” said Katie. “At a moment in time when girls and women in sport are being highlighted and valued more than ever before, we felt that this was an important event to take part in, to recognize the enthusiasm, strength and resilience of the athletes at Branksome Hall.”
The evening kicked off with a pep rally at Branksome Hall in front of the Athletics and Wellness Centre. Students, parents and colleagues from across the school gathered to celebrate and prepare. While enjoying a spread of snacks, attendees got pumped up for the game with sign-making and face painting. The rally wrapped up with Athletics Prefect Chelsea introducing each member of the team, allowing the athletes to shine and be cheered on by the entire community.

After the rally, community members were transported by bus to the game. The match began with a kickoff at 7:00 p.m., under the bright lights on Havergal College’s field. With a cheering crowd encouraging the Highlanders throughout the match, the energy and spirit displayed showed the athletes how much they are appreciated. Attendees were delighted to meet Branksome’s new Highlanders’ mascot.
Following the game, Ms. Flynn remarked, “Although the game did not end with the result that we were hoping for, we are so proud of the grit, determination and composure that the Highlanders displayed throughout the game, never giving up until the very end of the match. We are so proud of the team!”

Principal Grace McCallum, who was in the stands, expressed gratitude for the unforgettable evening: “From the coaches and chaperones who travelled with our students, to the many colleagues who came out to cheer on our athletes, it was a true show of Branksome spirit. The energy on the field and in the cheering section was unforgettable, and I’m so grateful for all you did to make it a night to remember!”
Thank you to Coach Smith and Coach Lewis for guiding our Highlanders, to Ms. Flynn and Ms. Bowers for organizing this fantastic event, and to the Advancement and Community Engagement team for throwing another fantastic Branksome pep rally.
